USDA Permits - Transportation of Butterflies Across State Lines

Butterflies are considered 'plant pests'. The Cabbage White is a butterfly imported from England. This butterfly is one reason farmers use chemicals on their plants. Obviously, they are a pest for cabbage farmers!

However, if you are raising carrots, parsley, fennel, or dill, and you are in a state that allows Black Swallowtails, we can ship them to you. This is odd since farmers of these crops would consider these beautiful butterflies a 'crop pest'.

No, it's not really for the purpose of 'crops' that these laws are made; it's the reason they have the authority to control transportation of butterflies across state lines. The laws are more for the purpose of keeping species out of areas where they are not naturally found, for keeping sub-species from mixing, and possibly for some political reasons in some instances.

But whatever the reason, we only ship butterflies which are permitted to be shipped out of Florida. The Mourning Cloak is the only butterfly permitted for transportation that is not allowed from or into Florida.

** States west of the Continental Divide will receive Monarch larvae dropshipped from a butterfly farm on the western side of the Continental Divide. The USDA does not allow shipment of Monarchs across the divide.

(Painted Lady chrysalises are available with your shipment for $4 each and Monarchs are $6 each.
All other species are $5 each. Quantitiy may be limited.)
